The twelve houses of the birth chart
The signs describe how a planet behaves; the houses describe where in life it shows up. A birth chart divides the sky at the moment of birth into twelve sections, one for each area of living — the self, money, home, partnership, career, and so on — and every planet lands in one of them.
Why a birth time matters
The houses are anchored to the horizon, and the horizon turns through the whole zodiac once a day. The Ascendant — the cusp of the 1st house — moves about one degree every four minutes, so a chart cast without a birth time has planets in signs but no houses at all. A time from the birth certificate is best; a rounded-off memory is better than nothing, with the understanding that houses near a cusp may shift.
There is more than one way to draw the house divisions. Torvii uses Placidus, the mainstream Western default, which sizes the houses unevenly according to latitude; whole-sign houses, the older system, simply make each sign a house starting from the rising sign. Both agree on which house is which; they disagree about where the lines fall.

The twelve houses fall into three groups of four, repeating around the wheel.
- Angular sits on one of the four angles; placements here tend to show up plainly.
- Succedent follows an angle; concerned with holding on to what the angle starts.
- Cadent precedes an angle; concerned with adjusting, learning and letting go.
