The 1st House: House of Self

The 1st house is the house of self: the body you were born into, the face you show before you have said a word, and the instinctive way you start things. Its cusp is the Ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, which is why the 1st house is the most personal point in a chart and the one that shifts fastest with birth time.
What the 1st House Governs
Everything in a chart is read from the 1st house outward. It governs physical appearance and vitality, first impressions, personal style, and the reflexive manner in which a person meets whatever is new — the greeting before the conversation, the posture before the argument. Where the 7th house is the other person, the 1st is the self walking toward them.
Because its cusp is the Ascendant, the sign here colours the whole chart the way a lens colours a photograph. An Aries 1st house tends to lead with directness and a quick step; a Cancer 1st house with caution and warmth; a Capricorn 1st house with composure. None of this is the person's inner life — that is the Moon's territory — but it is the first thing others meet, and often the thing a person is least able to see in themselves.
Planets in the 1st House
A planet in the 1st house is worn on the outside. The Sun here tends to produce someone whose identity is unmistakable in the room — presence comes naturally, and so does being noticed whether or not they wanted to be. The Moon here puts feeling on the surface: moods show on the face, and the person is often read as more emotional than they consider themselves to be.
Several planets in the 1st make a chart strongly self-directed. Such people tend to experience life as something they act on rather than something that happens to them, and they are frequently more visible than they realise. Mars here adds physical energy and a short fuse; Venus, charm and a concern with how things look; Saturn, a seriousness that can read as reserve well into adulthood.
An Empty 1st House, and the Cusp Sign
An empty 1st house is the most common case and says nothing is missing — the sign on the cusp and the position of its ruler carry the meaning instead. With Libra rising and Venus in the 10th, for example, the self is expressed through relationships and public roles even though nothing sits in the house itself. The chart ruler, the planet governing the Ascendant sign, is always worth finding: its house shows where the person's energy naturally goes.
