The 7th house is the house of the other: marriage and committed partnership, business partners, close one-to-one relationships, contracts, and — in the old texts — open enemies, the people one faces directly. Its cusp is the Descendant, opposite the Ascendant, and it describes what a person seeks in others and what they tend to project onto them.
What the 7th House Governs
If the 1st house is the self, the 7th is the mirror. It governs relationships that are chosen and binding — the marriage rather than the romance, the partner rather than the date — along with the legal and social frame around them: contracts, agreements, negotiations, and the court where disagreements are settled. Libra, its natural sign, gives it a concern with balance and fairness, and with the constant adjustment two people make to stay in step.
The Descendant sign is one of the most useful points in a chart because it tends to describe what a person is drawn to in partners and, often, what they disown in themselves. A person with Aries rising and Libra on the 7th may seek a diplomat and then be irritated by the diplomacy; the house is where one meets one's own missing pieces in someone else's shape.
Planets in the 7th House
The Sun in the 7th house tends to find identity through partnership — life feels most itself in a pair, and the partner's qualities matter enormously to the person's sense of who they are. Independence can be a lifelong lesson. The Moon here needs a close bond to feel secure and is often emotionally attuned to the partner's moods, sometimes more than to its own.
A populated 7th house makes relationship the central theme, for better and worse. Venus here is at home and tends toward harmonious, attractive partnerships; Mars brings passion and argument in equal measure, and sometimes a partner who fights; Saturn often delays commitment or brings an older, serious, or demanding partner and a lasting bond earned slowly; Uranus tends toward unconventional partnerships and a need for freedom inside them.
An Empty 7th House, and the Cusp Sign
An empty 7th house is very common and says nothing about whether a person will partner. The Descendant sign describes the kind of partner sought and the relationship's tone; its ruler shows where partnership happens and what it is for. Sagittarius on the 7th tends toward partners who broaden the world, often from elsewhere; Capricorn there is drawn to stability and may commit later. The Descendant, like the Ascendant, needs an accurate birth time.
